Library publicity for the new term

14 Sep

The academic year at Oxford starts in a few weeks’ time, and I am preparing library welcome packs for all our students.

Each pack contains a library bookmark, badge and map of all Oxford libraries.

The bookmark includes contact information for the library, opening hours and details of the lending rules.

Library welcome pack

There are 16 different badges. Each one has ‘St Hugh’s College Library’ around the edge and one larger word in the middle, e.g. Borrow, OxLIP+, SOLO, Browse, Enquiry, Citation. The aim is to familiarise the students with the vocabulary of the library, and I hope it will also generate a buzz as people compare badges with their friends and work out what all the terms mean.

    Dear Laura,
    That’s an interesting idea, can I ask what 20:2:4 means?

    @Ed Smithson
    20:2:4 refers to our new lending rules: 20 books, 2 weeks, up to 4 online renewals

    Love those badges: what a great idea!

    I’m thinking something similar could work for Dewey numbers since I know they can be imposing for new library users. Making a simple colourful association between the number and the subject and getting users used to the format.

    Love the badges – great idea. Can I be cheeky and ask the cost?

    • Laura Wilkinson September 23, 2010 at 14:40 #

      @Craigie-Lee – please refer to pricing info on their website or contact them directly if you have something more specific in mind. I ordered 50 each of 16 different designs.

    Ooh, love the badges! What did/do the students think of them?

      The response is good so far (it’s only the first week back) and the academics are all asking if they can have bookmarks too!
